When applying for an internship the letter of interest is important. A letter of interest is a well-written and put together letter that is written in order to compel the internship coordinator that you deserve to be considered for the internship.
The main purpose of a letter of interest is for the writer to communicate their accomplishments, education, skills, and experience to the organization.
In a letter of interest, you state how your skills add value to the needs of the organization you’re applying for. In this letter, you should always answer the following questions;
1. Why you feel that you’re a good fit to the organization.
2. How you’re qualifications are well-matched for the internship offered by the organization.
3. Why is this the right time for you to start an internship?
4. What should be you next step in pursing an interview with the organization?
The answers to the questions above will help the internship coordinator understand how the you qualify for the requirements of the internship. This will help the organization understand what skills, abilities, and education you bring to the table. The organization wants to see exactly what benefits you have to offer them.
This letter should point out how you can incorporate your strengths into the internship you’re applying for. The first sentence of the letter should grab the attention of the reader by the details included. A vague introduction in an interest letter will hold absolutely no accountability to respond to the letter.
An explanation paragraph after the introduction is important. This part of the letter states why you feel as if you’re a good fit for the organization. Simply by stating the following;
“I am writing you to express my interest in the Internship your organization is offering. Currently, I am at (blank) college majoring in (blank). My prior experience in (Blank) makes me a valid candidate for the internship.”
It’s always important to address, 2 to 4 details in the letter that is located in the description of the internship, and then tie those details in with the experience you have to offer. The words you use are important. You should never overemphasize what the job would do for you, instead you should express how you can benefit the organization. Organizations what to know how you can be an asset to their company.
The conclusion can always be the most difficult paragraph to write, some feel as if they are a parakeet repeating their words over again. In the conclusion you should simply state why you believe you’re a good fit to the organization and reiterate your interest in the position. Never state that you’re the best fit for the position, because one cannot know that information. Instead simply express why you’re a great fit, never use “best”.
When writing a letter of interest for an internship the wording is not everything, appearance is important as well.
When you check your mail and the envelope is small and not addressed to you, do you open that mail and read what’s in it? No, not always.
That letter is normally thrown away. One must make their letter of interest enter the priority stack of mail. This can be done by the type of envelop the letter is put in, such as; a large envelop or a fine linen envelope. The envelope must specifically be addressed to the organization. This will show the organization you are determined and important.
Now let’s address the format of the letter. The letter should include the following;
1. Full Name
2. Title
3. Organization
4. Address
5. Dear Internship Coordinator
If you’re unsure of the hiring manager’s name, then ALWAYS address them by their title. One should never address the coordinator by; Mrs., Miss., or Sir. This makes the letter unprofessional and impersonal. The format should be professional, precise, and clean. The letter should carry a business tone at all times, no abbreviations. Remember to be creative, passionate, and professional.
