When searching for a new job, don’t skip the letter of application. The letter is the most important part of the application process. It is important that you create a new letter of application for each job prospect. It gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself, tell why you are interested in the position and, most importantly, why you are the right person for the job. The letter should be specific to the duties and qualifications that are outlined in the job description.

Introduction
To start the letter of application, you will need an effective introduction. This is the place for you to ‘hook’ the reader, whether that is a hiring manager, human resources staff, or your next boss. The first paragraph should properly describe your mission statement and act as an elevator speech of sorts. In a few sentences you will want to state the position that you are applying for, why you are interested in that position, and provide a short explanation of where you are coming from. This statement should match the key points of the job description and give short details about how you are qualified for the position.

Work Experience
In the second paragraph, you will want to summarize your work experience. This information should be accurate, not exaggerated, and relate to the position you are applying for. Your resume is the place for bullet lists and details about all of your skills, but in this paragraph you are just trying to get the point across that you have experience that has prepared you for the position you wish to attain.

Education

In this section, you should start with the highest degree that you have earned. List the degree, any specializations, and the institution that you attained the degree from. Start the description with a doctorate degree, master’s degree, bachelor’s, and then associate’s degree as they apply to your history. After listing any degrees you have earned, it is acceptable to mention any certifications and special training that you have completed. You can list certifications and training that is not exactly related to the position you applying for if it showcases skills that could be relative to the job.

Extra Information
You may opt to include a paragraph about volunteer work, charity work, or related hobbies that you have if any of those situations apply to you and are relative to the company or position that you are interested in. It can make a huge difference between you and a competing applicant if you have humanitarian efforts included in your letter.

Closing
In the final paragraph, you can repeat your interest in the position and express your desire to speak to someone further about the opportunity. If you have transcripts or personal and professional references that are not included in the application process, you can disclose that those are available upon request. Good Luck!
