The applicant should use no more than three paragraphs to introduce their intentions, qualifications, and future goals. Here are five specific tips to use when writing a letter of application for internship.

-Explain how you became aware of the available intern position.
In the first paragraph explain how you became aware of the internship position being offered by the company/organization. If you learned about the intern position from a specific publication, then the title of that publication should be underlined. This helps the company to understand which of their advertising campaigns are making the most impact on their target population.

-Mention any praise that the company has publicly received.
In the second paragraph mention any awards or praise that the company has publicly received. This lets the reader know that you are aware of what they are doing and are truly interested in being a part of a respected and accomplished organization.

-Direct the reader’s attention to a specific item on your resume.
In the second paragraph, choose an item from your resume and make a direct reference to that item. For example: “As my resume indicates…” This direction gives the reader a specific reason to look over your resume to confirm the information that you mentioned in the letter. This extra attention to your resume could make your application information stand out as memorable. Which you could then followed up on during later contact conversations.

-State the qualifications that you have in reference to the intern position.
In the second paragraph describe how you would be a benefit to the company in that intern position. What previous employment or course work experience makes you a fit for what the company is looking to accomplish. (For example: Do you have previous sales, clinical research, or writing/documentation experience?) Your past experience in a specific area did not have to be a glowing success, but it is experience that you have gained. Mentally note what you learned from that experience, it may lead to the reader asking you a follow-up question on the subject.

-Be proactive about following up with your letter of application.
In the third paragraph give a specific time frame for when you will make a follow-up phone call to check on the status of your application and to schedule a time to talk with the person in charge of filling the intern position. Give them the date of a specific week that you will make the follow-up call, then give your contact number and ask them to leave a message if you are not available to receive the call. If you take the time to put forth the effort to state your intention, follow-up, and provide opportunity for a response, then it would appear that you are a self-starter, dependable, and ready for additional responsibility.
